Phil Bradley is a professional basket maker and willow grower
This course will introduce you to willow basketry and include an explanation of the cultivation and preparation of the raw materials. A range of basket making techniques will be covered and each student will produce at least one item of round work.

THE LONG STITCH LEATHER BINDING Ref: C1308
Douglas Mitchell is a conservator at the British Library, restorer and gold leaf finisher
The long stitch binding was an early form of book binding which prevailed from the 1st to 4th centuries. The early Codex binding, like the Coptic style, is still very popular with the modern binder. At this workshop you will be reproducing a long stitch, leather flap book with a foredge flap, using modern paper and materials, resulting in a decorative and pleasing adhesive binding. Paper will be provided, and there will be a small charge of £10 for other materials.

PRINTMAKING Ref: C1313
Peter Collins is a printmaker, wood engraver and experienced adult education tutor
This course encompasses a wide range of printmaking techniques using hand tools – wood and metal engraving, woodcut and drypoint. Print by hand or use Higham’s star wheel press – in monochrome or colour. A course for complete beginners, or those with some experience, you will learn traditional skills in a lively experimental atmosphere.

A York Minster Broderer for many years, Jane Matthews is very experienced teaching mixed media and stitching techniques
Want to do something a bit different and don’t know where to start? Learn to create fabric using tyvek, cling film, nappy liners, voile, silk, paint and computer prints. You will have a fabulous textile to embellish with stitches and beads. Use this as a base for a book cover, a petal bag or a panel and you have a unique creation.

You don’t need a kiln to enamel beads. Have fun with a torch and high fire for special effects or lower the flame for a range of subtle single colours. Learn how to stitch traditional Elizabethan Stumpwork creating insects, fruit, small animals and flowers worked on a background of heavy silk using coloured silks and metallic threads. If you would like to create a modern piece then any design which is raised is considered to be stumpwork and your inspiration can be taken from a book, picture or photograph using any fabric and threads you feel appropriate to add texture to your project.

Even the simplest of designs can be given extraordinary qualities by using interesting yarns with unusual textures. This course offers you the chance to design and knit from scratch small scale personal accessories such as jewellery or bags or something for the home. You will be using a combination of off-the-shelf yarns and knitting media you have created yourself using a variety of methods. The course is aimed at the adventurous knitter with an open mind. All you need to be able to do is knit, purl, and cast on and off.

Karen Quickfall is an experienced teacher of embroidery and stumpwork
Ruskin Lace is a very distinctive form of lace which originated as a cottage industry in the Lake District. It is worked on linen using a combination of drawn thread and cut linen work with the geometric designs being created using needlepoint lace techniques. The course is suitable for both beginners, who can purchase a starter pack (£9) from the tutor, and for those with more experience.
