| PARIS ~ CITY OF DREAMS
Ref: M1257 |
| Julian Williamson has been a conductor and lecturer for many years, both in the UK and abroad |
| From the final decade of the 19th century to the years following WW 1, Paris experienced a period of enormously important development displayed not just in music but in paintings, buildings and experimental expositions. The innovations of Debussy and Ravel would change the face of music and herald new ideas influencing composers the world over. Erik Satie in his own way was a flag-bearer for a quite different style, exciting a whole group of post-war musicians – among them Poulenc, Honegger and Milhaud. We shall look at the amazing variety of musical movements in Paris, tracing the thrilling new ideas from within, and from without. Together they produced an intoxicating cocktail on which the new composers at home and abroad could drink their fill – Stravinsky, Falla, Messiaen and Walton to name but a few. By the end of this slightly unusual course you will realise why this great city was such a magnet to so many great artists, and, through them, contributed so much to the growth of 20th century music. |

| tHE JOY OF MUSIC ~ CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS
Ref: M1287 |
| Chris Howes is a pianist, promoter, teacher and occasional broadcaster |
| 1910 was the end of the brief Edwardian period. Social and musical change was brewing. Operetta – such as The Quaker Girl and Naughty Marietta – still dominated the West End and Broadway musical theatre but ragtime rhythms were everywhere in American cities; significant orchestral works were completed or premiered including Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite, Vaughan Williams’ Sea Symphony and Mahler’s 9th Symphony. Famous musical births of that year included the fantastic Belgian gypsy jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt and the song-writer of such revered shows as Guys and Dolls, Frank Loesser. There’s endless joy in the musical treasures unearthed in our ‘Centenary Celebrations’. |
