UKULELE FOR ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS Ref: M1307
Nick Corder is a freelance writer and teacher; playing the ukulele is one of his hobbies
Are you a musician who’s always fancied playing an instrument? Put off by the cost? Put off by how hard it all looks? The ukulele is cheap, portable fun and can be used as a stepping stone to other stringed instruments, especially the guitar. This course is aimed at absolute musicians. We’ll learn some basic chords and strumming techniques and, using well-known folk songs, develop a mini-repertoire over the weekend. You’ll be surprised at what you can play using only a handful of chords.
Residential: £185.00
Non-residential: £125.00

MOZART ~ THE YEAR OF FIGARO Ref: M1324
David Lindley is a freelance lecturer and writer and was the WEA organiser for Cumbria
For Mozart, 1786 was dominated by The Marriage of Figaro, his greatest comic opera. This will be the centre of the course, and we shall experience and explore it through the use of DVD, CD and piano. But we shall approach and leave it through other pieces written during these months: two of his greatest piano concertos (23 and 24), the Prague Symphony, and some of his most original and dramatic chamber music.
Residential: £185.00
Non-residential: £125.00

CAROLS WITH CONFIDENCE Ref: M1331
Roger Wilkes is a freelance music lecturer, director of Mostly Music and a choral director in NW England
If you have always longed to join in the church or community carol service, but have shied off through feelings of vocal inadequacy (limited, or even no, previous singing experience, possibly a belief that you are tone deaf!) please join us this weekend. If you are more vocally experienced, please join us too. During this ‘fun’ weekend, you will encounter many different carols, familiar and less so, and will learn to sing them with confidence and enjoyment: you will also develop basic singing skills and enlarge your musical knowledge.

HATS OFF GENTLEMEN, A GENIUS ~ THE AMAZING STORY OF ROBERT AND CLARA SCHUMANN Ref: M1340
Julian Williamson has been a conductor and lecturer for many years
When Robert Schumann met Clara Wieck it was the start of one of the most remarkable partnerships in musical history. The love between the highly strung and unpredictable young composer and the beautiful, brilliant child prodigy is a story in itself. In the fourteen years they were together, Clara encouraged her husband’s genius. We follow the flowering of his music and his relationships with other great musicians such as Berlioz, Mendelssohn and Wagner. His tragically early death, followed by the re-emergence of Clara, embarking on a new career as a piano virtuoso, her friendship with Robert’s protégé, Johannes Brahms, and her goal to ensure the appreciation of her husband’s music, all make for a fascinating story.
Residential: £185.00

THE GREAT CHORAL CLASSICS ~ PART I Ref: M1372
Alan Cuckston is a professional concert artist, conductor and lecturer with many years’ teaching experience
Beginning in the Early Baroque era with the Monteverdi Vespers of 1610, the staple choral repertoire of choral masterpieces stretches across the centuries right into our own time with such works as John Adams's minimalist Harmonium. Presenting an analysis of the music, and an account of the origins of each work, the lectures will range through Bach's B minor Mass, Handel's Israel in Egypt, Haydn's Creation, the Requiems of Verdi and Fauré, and oratorios and cantatas by Elgar, Holst and Vaughan Williams. As the repertoire is so vast, the second part of the course will be given in the next session.
Residential: £185.00
Non-residential: £125.00
