This workshop aims to introduce the basic tenets of Buddhism. During the day we explore the origin of Buddhism, its ethical foundation and Enlightenment – the goal of the Buddhist path. The course will include a variety of Buddhist meditative exercises. It can be taken in conjunction with the weekend course Meditation – to Quieten the Mind which starts this evening.

John will introduce you to a variety of meditative techniques and help you to understand the concepts underlying the practice. Sessions will include periods of seated practice using ordinary chairs. No special postures are required. Techniques and concepts will come mainly from the Buddhist tradition but no attempt will be made to promote any particular faith tradition – meditation is of universal relevance.

Join Viv and Geoff for a superbly illustrated talk exploring works by the artists and poets of the Romantic Movement in their efforts to portray the ‘savage grandeur’ of Lakeland scenery.

Having to ‘say a few words’ can happen quite often in everyday life. Some people find it easy; for others it is a daunting task. There are all kinds of occasions when we are asked to speak in public, make a presentation or have to attend an interview. Good public speaking is a skill which can be taught and who better to do that than a retired judge. The course requires no prior preparation. It involves a great deal of student participation.
