The SPIRIT of the NORTH – NORDIC LANDSCAPE PAINTING A2061

Ask us about or request a place on this Course

In Northern Europe, landscape painting has a powerful hold on our visual culture, and none more so than in Scandinavia, where far-Northerly folk have found a kinship with nature to be indispensible.   The 19th Century paintings of snow and sun, rock and forest, mountain and fjord – and the people who lived there -  helped confirm their difference from Mediterranean culture and shaped their national identity.

This is a repeat of N2037 due to popular demand!
This course is being repeated as N2076 due to popular demand!

This course will take in gardens ranging from the grand old to the charming modern.  At Lowther Castle, set in 130 acres, we will see and hear about the on-going restoration of this once great garden which was forgotten about for 70 years.  The relatively new garden at Winton Park occupies 3 acres and contains both traditional and contemporary features.  We will visit 3 other private gardens including Henley Syke which, although only half an acre in size, is an absolute gem.

WILDLIFE THROUGH the CAMERA N2120

Ask us about or request a place on this Course

The opportunity to photograph wildlife surrounds us daily. This course is designed for the beginner who may only have a basic camera and wishes to learn more about the skills and compositional elements which make a good photograph. Much of the activity will be in the grounds of Higham Hall (including having a go in a hide!) although there will be an outing to put into practice compositional skills. There will be a certain amount of walking and so it is essential that you are reasonably mobile.

GETTING to KNOW MUSHROOMS and TOADSTOOLS N2133

Ask us about or request a place on this Course

Friday 27 to Monday 30 September

Autumn is a wonderful time for walking in the countryside not least because this is the time of year to witness the bonanza of mushrooms and toadstools that can suddenly appear to carpet woodlands and spring up on lawns.  This course is intended for those who may have some knowledge of fungi and who want to develop their skills in identification.  We will foray in private woodlands and nature reserves as well as exploring those fungi that are associated with grasslands, in particular waxcap grasslands.   If your interests in fungi are gastronomic then there will also be something for you!
