BIRDSONG IN WILD NATURE AND HUMAN ARTS ref: N677
Jeffery Boswall
This course will be a celebration of the science of birdsong and the human response to it. The ‘how’, ‘what’, ‘where’ and ‘when’ of birdsong and the ‘why’. But more than all that: do birds have their own appreciation of musical beauty? And what about our artistic response in prose, poetry, music and video? There will be an evening ‘owl prowl’ and a dawn chorus walk. Many recordings will be played plus radio and television shows. Come prepared for a wealth of material, demanding lots of attentiveness, but also bring your own favourite music and poems - inspired by birdsong of course!

MOUNTAIN MOODS – sketching and painting mountains ref: A678
Lionel Playford.
The Lake District is famous for its varied mountains and its variable weather which shrouds or displays them. Follow in the footsteps of many an intrepid artist and sketch the mountains outdoors and evoke their moods in paint back in the studio. You should be able to confidently walk a round trip of up to three miles on rough tracks, over stiles and up moderately steep slopes (level 2). We will not be going to the tops of mountains, but rather to good vantage points to observe them. Beginners and more experienced students welcome.
