BEETHOVEN ~ THE TRIUMPH OF FIDELIO ref: M1121
David Lindley is a freelance lecturer and writer and was the WEA organiser for Cumbria
The version we now know of Fidelio, Beethoven’s only opera, had its triumphal premiere in May 1814. But it had taken him a full decade to wrestle the work into its final shape. Using CD, DVD and the piano, we shall approach it in the light of this struggle, in the context of the turbulent times, and in the company of other pieces which Beethoven composed during these years. They will include the Piano Sonata Les Adieux, the Archduke Trio, the Serioso String Quartet and the Seventh Symphony.
