LEONARD BERNSTEIN – The COMPLETE MUSICIAN M2023
Ask us about or request a place on this Course
A towering artistic figure of the twentieth century, Bernstein was a ‘man for all musics’, the like of whom we may never see again. Our study includes him as formidable conductor of works by Ravel, Mendelssohn and Mahler and of artists such as Kiri Te Kanawa and José Carreras; as pianist and composer of orchestral and choral works, including the Chichester Psalms and jazz-inflected pieces; as creator of the ground-breaking stage musicals On The Town, Candide and West Side Story. We look back at his success as a great ambassador and communicator for all that is best in music.

Working from life has been a central element of art education for centuries. We will be following the example of artists like Degas, Bonnard, Picasso and Matisse all of whom made the figure their focus. This course will concentrate on three key areas of image-making: composition, markmaking and the use of materials. Students’ increased understanding and confidence with these three elements is likely to lead to the creation of more challenging and original work. The course is not suitable for beginners and students should have some recent experience of painting from life.

Gustav Klimt, after years of dismissal as merely a decorative artist, has now been recognized as not only the greatest artist of Vienna – of both the last Hapsburg era and the revolutionary secession – but also a pioneer of the depiction of women. Understanding Freud’s critique of sexual repression, the frankness of his pictures polarised contemporary opinion and contributed to the development of modern attitudes which are still evolving.

FACES, FIGURES and COLOUR A2112
Ask us about or request a place on this Course
Sunday 8 to Wednesday 11 September
The theme of faces and figures is a complex, intriguing subject. Historically, artists have puzzled over the portrayal of the human form and portraiture. This short course can only be an introduction at looking and interpreting. So, required is the ability to leave behind your preconceived ideas of what you think is there and start ‘listening’ with your eyes. A life model will be used for part of the course. Enthusiasm, patience, ability to draw plus experience with painting is a must. This is not a course for beginners.

WHO WAS the REAL ANTONIO SALIERI? M2114
Ask us about or request a place on this Course
Friday 13 to Sunday 15 September
The name of Salieri has had an appalling press for many years. Legends have built up about him murdering Mozart, which were hardly helped by derogatory works by Pushkin, Rimsky-Korsakov and, more recently, Peter Shaffer – all of which has resulted in him being viewed as a kind of musical pariah. This could not be further from the truth, and it is time to set the record straight. In fact, Salieri was one of the most important musicians in Europe for some fifty years. He was held in high esteem by all the great musicians of the day – Gluck, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert and Beethoven – who admired his works and honoured him as one of the finest teachers of his age. We will delve into this fascinating character and, with the help of some of his rarely heard music, build a picture of a great man who, sadly, has been so abused by history.

NOTE: ERROR IN OUR PRINTED BROCHURE:
Marked ** below.
Sunday 15 to Friday 20 September
Contemporary Art History is littered with narratives which conjure the ‘death’ or end of painting. This course will engage students with ways to invigorate their painting practice, within the context of early 21st Century (**this is correct, but our printed brochure states “20th Century” and it is, we are reassured by Steve, 21st Century – sorry for the mix-up!) culture. Through a series of exercises, discussions, demonstrations and a variety of subject material, students will be pushed to extend their thinking of painting, as a visual art practice and to develop their technical handling of media. Some level 1 walking may be involved.
